Metaphor A to Z

The Skin

The skin is the outer layer covering our body and it has many functions.

The skin protects against injuries and bacterial invasion, regulates body temperature, aids in the elimination of waste products, prevents dehydration, acts as a reservoir for food and water, is a sense organ and produces Vitamin D for the body.

Skin is our ‘outer layer;’ it is our interface with the world and is the part of us that can be immediately seen by others.

Problems with our skin are varied, but generally they mean that we have an issue with self-protection and self-portrayal.

They represent our relationships with others and with life in general. When we have issues with our self-worth, or problems with intimacy, they will manifest themselves as problems in our skin system.

If we feel reactive we may develop allergies. If we are hurt we might suffer from punctures and abrasions. Or, if we’re feeling emotionally injured, we might be physically bruised.

The word “skinship,” a word first used by the Japanese, describes a level of intimacy where touch is natural.
