Metaphor A to Z

Stomach

The purpose of the stomach is to digest nutrients; it is located below the diaphragm.

The stomach is a metaphor for our ability to understand and accept what we receive. It reflects how we digest the emotional content of our life experience, so that we can be nurtured by it.

Metaphorically, problems with our stomach indicate that there is something we ‘can’t stomach:’ something is emotionally indigestible to us. As a result, we cannot receive or accept nurturing.
