Metaphor A to Z
Premenstrual Tension or Syndrome (PMS)
PMS occurs several days prior to the onset of menstruation. Its symptoms include irritability, emotional tension, anxiety and various mood changes.
It reflects a major internal conflict between independence and dependence. We have need for help and nurturing that is in conflict with the defense of dissociation and the need to break away and maintain dominance.
We feel tender and vulnerable and are afraid of being hurt again. There is a fear of intimacy and sexuality, coupled with anger about our needs and, possibly, about our life situation as well.
We are attempting to control others because of a lack of trust and communication that stems from our feelings of confusion and ambivalence.
As a result of old heartbreaks, we are unwilling to communicate and join with others, and we lack the confidence to take the next step.
We have resorted to emotional bullying and blackmail because we feel misunderstood, impatient and intolerant.
It can lead to feelings that life, men or others owe us something. As a result, we have little patience for ourselves. There may be an ancestral pattern involved.
