Metaphor A to Z

Nose

The nose is the organ for the sense of smell. It also functions to warm, moisturize and filter inspired air.

The nose represents issues about knowing, having knowledge and having a ‘nose for news’ through gossip or keeping up with what is occurring around us.

The nose indicates our level of ambition and business acumen. It can also, at times, be a reflection of our sexuality.

Problems with our nose indicate that we are sticking our nose into something we shouldn’t; we are being ‘nosy’ about something.

When we keep secrets, particularly family secrets, the nose can suffer because they eat away at us.

A hit to the nose can signify a painful shock, ‘taking it on the nose.’ It can also indicate a negative attitude, or a place we failed in life or some aspect of sexuality.

Spite may be a factor in the problem: we could be ‘biting our nose to spite our face.’
