Metaphor A to Z

Hyperventilation

Hyperventilation is extremely rapid breathing that causes carbon dioxide depletion in the body. If this goes unchecked, we lose our desire to breathe and our blood pressure drops.

Hyperventilation is often caused by anxiety, and leads to panic as our breathing rate increases. Hyperventilation is a symptom that means we are overwhelmed by anxiety about our process.

We compensate by pushing ourselves to shift it but, on the other hand, we are afraid to sort it out.

The anxiety caused by the conflict of these two parts of ourselves ‘takes our breath away.’
