Metaphor A to Z

Bulimia Nervosa

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by episodic, binge eating, followed by some kind of purge, such as self-induced vomiting or the use of laxatives.

We are caught between the need to indulge and the need for social approval. We are suffering from self-image problems and have a strong need for approval and acceptance.

There is a vicious cycle of indulgence, self-attack, purging, need, indulgence, etc.

Bulimia is a similar problem to anorexia, but it has different symptoms. We are in need of love and nurturing, and we attempt to get it through food, but we resort to self-attack because of the disgust we feel at our own neediness.

We fear lack of approval and loss of attractiveness through weight gain. This keeps us stuck between swallowing food (at times trying to gorge on experience in general) and rejecting it.

We feel out of control and helpless, but we are the one doing the bullying and it’s self-destructive. Like anorexia, we are self-critical and have unreasonably high self-expectations.

The self-obsession of eating disorders is a trap the ego uses to stop us from hearing the needs and calls for help of others around us.

Eating disorders demonstrate an imbalance of the masculine-feminine, and they carry a deep need for, but also fear of, intimacy and spiritual partnership.

The trap of perfectionism may be the heart of the problem.
