Metaphor A to Z

Chin

The chin forms the point of the lower jaw and represents wisdom and contemplation of stored information, as well as attitude, determination and pride. ‘Keep your chin up’ is an exhortation to be positive.

When we have our chin up, we are moving or looking forward with strong determination. Having our chin down is a sign of depression.

Problems with the chin mean we are giving up on something or that we feel victimized. The words ‘taking it on the chin’ metaphorically reflect that we have taken a hard, direct hit.
