Alcoholism is a chronic disease, characterized by a dependency on alcohol. Alcoholism means that we are caught in a vicious cycle of sacrifice and indulgence leading to emotional exhaustion and burn out.
We are constantly dealing with old feelings of trying to do the right thing, but are exhausting ourselves because it’s a role. This is a pattern of trying to save the family, which began in early childhood and can only lead to feelings of failure.
We are thrown into a downward spiral, which starts out as an attempt to drown the feelings of loss and failure with alcohol. Underneath this issue is a deep fear of our purpose. We have misinterpreted purpose as sacrifice, and confused service with roles.
