An addiction is a physiological, psychological dependence on something. Addictions can be to drugs, money, sex, love, lying, etc.
Addiction is the acting-out of an extreme form of needs, and involves a belief that something external to us will provide relief. This can only lead to profound disappointment.
Our belief is based on feelings of being inadequate and unloved. We believe that whatever we use and are addicted to will provide the missing part, the completion of self.
Addiction comes from a ‘Needy Story:’ a script that speaks of never getting enough nurturing and that we now use as an excuse to take. Addiction can arise from a crucial loss of bonding and the resulting separation-alienation.
The addiction covers a fear of leadership and the avoidance of taking on a specific project that would generate the level of fulfillment needed. Addiction is ultimately used to deny our purpose, because the feelings of not accomplishing something are so big.
Addiction , besides indicating lost bonding and unmet needs, reflects an unresolved heartbreak, shattered dreams and a turning away from life.
The common underlying dynamics for addictions are great need, lost bonding and a belief that something outside of ourselves can save us.
The dynamics of indulgence, dissociation, sacrifice and self-attack can also be involved in the issue. There is a vicious cycle at work in all cases of addiction: manipulation/unworthiness progresses into taking/getting and then to emptiness/greater-hunger, before beginning over again.
